Proposals are being accepted for natural-resource projects that benefit the lands and resources of the San Juan National Forest and the rural economies of local counties, which opt to receive Title II funds through the recent extension by Congress of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act.
The legislation is designed to fund projects that restore watersheds, decommission or maintain roads, remove noxious weeds, thin vegetation, or otherwise improve the condition of the National Forest. Projects should make investments and create employment opportunities through maintenance of existing infrastructure, implementation of stewardship objectives or restoration of land health and water quality.
Applicants are highly encouraged to coordinate their Title II project proposals through their local county and San Juan National Forest Ranger District prior to submittal. Project proposals that meet the intent of the legislation will be reviewed by the San Juan National Forest Secure Rural Schools Advisory Committee (RAC) on Friday, September 21, 2012.
The RAC will provide recommendations to the Forest Service on which projects should be funded. The RAC is made up of citizen members representing a wide range of interests in the local communities.
To be considered, project proposals must be received by close of business by Tuesday, August 21, 2012, and may be mailed or hand-delivered to Mark Stiles, Designated Federal Official, San Juan National Forest, 15 Burnett Court, Durango, CO 81301.
The Title II Project application form is available online.
